Release of the Brits

The release of the 15 British hostages was, of course, a relief to everyone because no one wanted the stress of an on-going crisis with Western military personnel under the gun. However, this resolution was completely predictable from the first day of the crisis. The purpose of the Iranians was not to protect or guard their borders, but to turn British public opinion against the United States in the global struggle against the radical Islamic threat. The support of the British is the only thread of hope for maintaining European support for U.S. leadership in this war. By orchestrating this magnanimous gesture, the Iranians painted themselves as the sane, gracious and reasonable saviors of peace as opposed to those vicious Americans with their Abu Graibs and Guantanamos. With the predictable response of a leftist British press, this will certainly prove to be an ingenious strategy on the part of the Iranians, as so many of the British people are looking for reasons and excuses to withdraw from the conflict and bury their heads in the sand. Unfortuantely for them, they will, all the sooner, be awakened once again to a bombing or some other horror on their own soil promulgated by an Islamic presence in their own land supported by the Iranians.
